General Liability Insurance for Educational Consultants

General Liability is separate from Professional Liability / E&O. Here’s what it may help cover, and why most school and district engagements ask for both.

What General Liability is built for

General Liability (GL) is designed to help respond to certain covered claims involving eligible third-party bodily injury or property damage arising from your business operations — not the quality of your guidance, testing, or curriculum work. For an educational consultant, that typically means incidents connected to physical presence: a student or parent is injured during an in-person testing session or meeting, or you accidentally damage property while working at a family’s home, a school, or a rented space.

GL is not designed to respond to allegations that your recommendations, evaluations, or curriculum design were wrong or negligent — that exposure is addressed separately under Professional Liability / E&O.

Why consultants who mostly work by phone or video still carry it

Many guidance-focused consultants work primarily by phone, video call, and email, and reasonably wonder whether GL is necessary. In practice, most school and district contracts request a minimum GL limit — often $1,000,000 per occurrence — as a standard baseline in vendor agreements, regardless of how often you’re physically present. See our Insurance Requirements page for how these clauses typically read.

In-person testing and evaluation sessions

For testing and evaluation practices especially, in-person sessions are a routine part of the work — at a family’s home, a library, a rented office, or on school grounds. GL is the coverage built for the bodily injury or property damage exposure of physically being present with a student and their materials or equipment, separate from the accuracy of the assessment itself.

Additional insured and certificate requests

Schools and districts frequently ask to be added as an “additional insured” on your GL policy, and to receive a certificate of insurance (COI) confirming coverage is in force before an engagement begins. This is a routine, low-cost endorsement on most policies. See our COI page for how the process works.

What GL generally does not cover

GL does not respond to claims about the accuracy, quality, or outcome of your guidance, testing, or curriculum work — that is the role of Professional Liability / E&O. It also does not typically extend to employment-related claims, cyber incidents, or damage to your own business property, each of which is addressed by separate coverage types where applicable.

Working across homes, schools, and rented spaces

Many educational consultants split their time between a home office, family homes, and school or district sites, sometimes in the same week. GL generally follows you across these locations as part of your business operations, rather than being tied to one fixed address, though your agent will want an accurate picture of where and how often you’re physically present when scoping your policy.

Questions, answered

Does General Liability cover a claim that my testing report was wrong?+

No. That kind of allegation — about the accuracy or quality of your professional work — falls under Professional Liability / E&O, not General Liability.

Do I need GL if I mostly work over video calls?+

Most school and district contracts request a minimum GL limit as a standard baseline regardless of how often you’re physically on-site. Tell us your typical setup on the quote form and we’ll confirm what makes sense.

What’s a typical GL limit schools and districts ask for?+

$1,000,000 per occurrence is a common baseline request, sometimes paired with a $2,000,000 aggregate. See our Insurance Requirements page for how to read a specific contract clause.

Can a school or district be added as an additional insured?+

Yes, this is a routine, generally low-cost endorsement most carriers can add to your GL policy.

Does GL cover damage I accidentally cause to a family’s home during a testing session?+

GL is the coverage designed for eligible property damage claims connected to your business operations, which can include incidents during an in-person session, subject to the policy’s terms, conditions, and exclusions.
